Toroidal Cores (Rings): Advantages, Properties, Applications & Sizes

Ferrite cores are a type of magnetic core made from ferrites, which are ferrimagnetic, non-conductive substances containing manganese/nickel, zinc, and other compounds. Their unique properties like working efficiently with low losses at high frequencies make them ideal for a plethora of applications such as transformer cores and inductors in power supplies.

In order to work with these many applications, ferrite cores come in a wide range of shapes and sizes. Let us look at the significance, properties, applications and sizes of one of the most popular ones—Toroidal Cores (also known as ring cores).

Toroidal Cores

Toroidal cores are used in electric circuits of inductors and transformers due to their lower operating temperature & higher efficiency. They are inherently MnZn-based soft ferrites that are circular or ring-like in shape.

This enclosed loop shape offers a higher magnetic field whereas the absence of gaps in its making reduces leakage. The quality of any toroidal core is as good as the toroidal cores manufacturer as its essential that they go through quality checks to ensure they meet the requirements.

Apart from that, they offer the benefit of high magnetic efficiency & high resistance to any external magnetic fields applied. Their cross-section area is uniform and they can have different coatings.

Advantages

High Magnetic Field

Due to their physical and chemical composition, toroidal cores possess high magnetic efficiency. This is what makes them ideal for use in transformers, which function on the concept of magnetisation. High efficiency equals a higher output in transformers.

Less Electromagnetic Interference

Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) interferes with the working of other electric devices. The toroidal core’s round shape lets the magnetic flux escape easily, resulting in less electromagnetic interference on the surrounding circuits.

Compact

Toroidal cores are ideal to use in a multitude of applications. This requires a compact yet effective shape. These types of cores are approximately 50% lighter & take up at least 64% less volume in applications as compared to other kinds of ferrite cores.
